Slow Wi-Fi is one of those problems that affects everyone in the office but nobody quite gets around to fixing properly. It is easy to blame the internet provider, but in most cases we see across Brisbane offices, the internet connection itself is fine. The problem is the Wi-Fi network inside the building.
Your Router Is Probably in the Wrong Spot
The single most common cause of poor office Wi-Fi is router placement. If your router is tucked in a server cupboard, mounted in a corner, or sitting on the floor behind a filing cabinet, you are starting with a disadvantage.
Wi-Fi signals weaken as they pass through walls, floors, and furniture. For a typical Brisbane office in a converted warehouse in Teneriffe or a multi-level building in the CBD, the router needs to be centrally located and elevated, not hidden away.
One Access Point Is Rarely Enough
Consumer-grade routers are designed for homes, not offices. If your office is larger than about 80 square metres or has thick walls, a single router will not provide reliable coverage everywhere.
Business-grade access points, properly positioned and configured, eliminate dead zones and provide consistent performance. For open-plan offices, two or three access points with seamless roaming can transform the experience.
Channel Congestion
In shared office buildings, which are common in Brisbane's inner suburbs, dozens of Wi-Fi networks can be competing for the same radio channels. This is like everyone trying to have a conversation in a crowded room.
Switching your network to 5GHz where possible and selecting the least congested channel can make a significant difference. Business-grade access points handle this automatically.
Quick Wins You Can Try Today
Restart your router if you have not in a while. Move it to a more central, elevated position. Separate your guest Wi-Fi from your business network so visitors are not consuming bandwidth. Check whether old devices that only support 2.4GHz are dragging down performance for everyone.
If these do not help, the issue likely requires a proper Wi-Fi survey and network redesign. We do this regularly for Brisbane businesses and the improvement is usually dramatic.
